Chairman’s report to the Parish Meeting AGM
Long-standing matters continued to feature in our discussions this year but new issues have added interest. For example, a plan for a defibrillator in Hopton Castle has become a reality and the defibrillator, managed by the Community Heartbeat Trust, will be installed in the decommissioned phone box in late May or June. Our thanks go particularly to Jon Allen who has led this campaign and to those who have assisted to date or who will take on future roles in this important community service. For the first time in many years we will be requesting a precept from Shropshire County Council (SCC) to help with the payments towards the defibrillator. Another ‘technology issue’, the3-phase fibre optics system, seems to have fizzled out although Parish cables, dating back to 1953, are in need of replacement. The Parish Meeting website continues to be updated by Jon Allen, but the village notice board has been repaired and still serves a valuable function in the community.
Re-occurring issues involve the Parish environment. 2017-18 has been the worst year for potholes in recent Shropshire history. Although Highways have repaired many of the holes, many more have formed during the long wet and cold winter. SCC has a huge backlog of repairs and, according to recent reports, additional vehicles have been commissioned to hasten progress. The village stream has been the point of some heated discussion but a resolution is in sight. The Parish Meeting continues to monitor planning applications; nothing contentious was noted over the current period. Nor have there been issues with cycling events in Hopton Forest, which appear to be well-managed by Pearce Cycles.
My thanks go to all the members of the Committee for their help and support over the past year.
